The Japanese word On (恩) On represents one of the deepest and most transformative forces in the samurai tradition. Often translated as “debt of gratitude,” On is a concept that encompasses respect, loyalty, and a sense of unwavering responsibility toward those who have shaped and guided us in life. In samurai culture, this value was essential; a warrior who recognized On felt a responsibility to honor his ancestors, teachers, and lords, acknowledging the debt that had been incurred for their teachings and protection.
In martial arts and in everyday life, On offers a perspective on how we can live with respect, responsibility and constant gratitude towards those who have contributed to our growth.

The On has deep roots in the ethics of Bushido (way of the warrior), the code of samurai values. In feudal Japan, the On represented a mutual commitment between a samurai and his master, known as RPM or "duty of loyalty." This debt was much more than a social obligation; it involved an emotional and spiritual reciprocity that the warrior felt toward his superiors. The samurai believed that their honor and dignity were directly linked to their ability to fulfill this debt.
The On covered three main areas of samurai life:
Gratitude towards the Ancestors:The samurai honored their lineage and heritage, believing that their current strength came from the sacrifices and achievements of previous generations.
Loyalty to the Master or Feudal Lord: Loyalty to the master represented a relationship of respect and devotion, where the samurai gave his life in exchange for the trust placed in him.
Appreciation towards the Martial Arts MasterThe knowledge and skills a samurai acquired were seen as invaluable gifts, a debt that required continued respect.
Today, although the Japanese feudal system no longer exists, On remains a central part of martial arts. Practitioners of disciplines such as karate, judo, aikido and kendo continue to incorporate On into their training, both as a reminder of respect for their teachers and ancestors and as a guide for their personal conduct.
The On demands that the student honor and respect the sensei (teacher). This manifests itself in concrete actions such as greeting before and after each class, obeying the teacher's instructions and showing gratitude for the teachings. The relationship between student and teacher is not transactional; it is a relationship based on trust, where the On manifests itself in the effort that each student puts into their training.
Practitioners of traditional martial arts also feel the On towards the founders of their disciplines. They follow a code of conduct and practice techniques with the precision and respect they deserve, aware that these styles have been passed down from generation to generation. The On becomes a debt towards all those who have preserved the art, so each practice becomes an act of gratitude.
On helps students recognize that their progress is made possible by their predecessors. Through gratitude, students develop discipline and humility, understanding that every movement they master is the result of centuries of refinement. Practicing a martial discipline is not just about gaining physical strength, but also about cultivating character.
Beyond martial arts, On is a value that can enhance our relationships and sense of purpose in everyday life. Gratitude and responsibility toward those who have helped us grow can transform our perspective and our actions.
The family, as a fundamental unit of support and guidance, deserves our respect and gratitude. On in family life means remembering and honoring the efforts of our parents and ancestors. In a practical sense, this involves being present in difficult times, offering help, and maintaining family harmony, actions that strengthen ties and the sense of unity.
In life, many people help and guide us, whether in education, work or personal life. Recognizing the On towards these people implies being aware of their contribution and showing them gratitude. This can be expressed in reciprocity: returning the favor or simply showing loyalty and respect.
The On also applies in the workplace, where one may owe a debt of gratitude to mentors and colleagues who have facilitated their professional growth. This can be reflected in one's work ethic and willingness to help others. Acting with gratitude and loyalty at work not only strengthens relationships, but also fosters an environment of cooperation and respect.
Applying On in daily life can seem challenging, but there are simple practices that help cultivate this sense of gratitude and responsibility. Here are some practical methods for living according to On:
Taking a few minutes at the end of the day to reflect on the people who have had a positive impact on our lives strengthens the sense of gratitude. This practice helps us recognize the influence of others on our path and make more conscious decisions.
Showing gratitude verbally or in writing to those who have helped us reinforces On. A thank you note or a few sincere words can transform the relationship and make the other person feel valued and appreciated as well.
The practice of On also extends to being a support for others, especially those who do not have the same opportunities. Helping others, whether through mentoring, emotional or material support, represents an act of gratitude towards those who have helped us.
In many cultures, respecting traditions and teachings passed down through generations is a way of expressing On. Participating in family celebrations, remembering ancestral stories and keeping customs alive shows a sense of gratitude towards the past.
Cultivating On not only helps strengthen our relationships, but also has a positive impact on our emotional and psychological life. The practice of gratitude has proven to be a powerful tool for personal well-being.
Improve Personal Relationships: Gratitude strengthens bonds and creates an environment of respect and loyalty.
Increase Emotional Resilience: Recognizing the value of others helps us to be more humble and grateful, qualities that make us more resilient in the face of challenges.
Promotes Personal Growth: The discipline that accompanies On encourages personal development focused on respect and integrity.
Reduces Stress and AnxietyBy focusing on what we have received, rather than what we lack, we reduce negative thoughts and feelings of lack.
On is much more than an ancient value; it is a philosophy applicable to modern life that helps us cultivate respect, gratitude, and a sense of responsibility. By acknowledging the debt we owe to those who have guided and supported us, we can live with greater awareness, honor, and purpose.
