Tatemae (建前) and Honne (本音) These are two concepts deeply rooted in Japanese culture. Tatemae can be translated as “facade” or “public appearance,” while Honne represents personal and genuine feelings or desires. In everyday life, these two dimensions help individuals maintain harmonious social relationships, even when their inner desires may differ from what society expects of them.

Japan is a society that values group cohesion and harmony, where each person seeks to minimize conflict. Tatemae and Honne are two tools that allow this balance to be managed.
Tatemae and Honne are fundamental in Japanese culture not only to build social peace, but also to allow people to have a reserved identity, protected from the demands of society.
The Bushido code of honor, followed by the samurai, places great importance on duty, honor and loyalty. This value system often required warriors to conceal their personal feelings and act with Tatemae, that is, in accordance with the norms of their environment and what was expected of them in critical situations. The ability to maintain a facade, even in difficult situations, was considered an essential virtue.
A samurai could be facing doubts, sadness or even fear, but under the concept of Tatemae he had to act with firmness and serenity. Tatemae, in this context, meant a discipline that allowed not only respect for rank and orders, but also the preservation of group morale. This was key in martial arts where every action has an impact on the team and joint training.
Honne also played a role, albeit a more intimate one. When a samurai was alone or with someone he trusted completely, he could express his fears and reflect on his true feelings, which strengthened his spirit and personal understanding. Honne allowed the warrior to connect with his essence, and even if this connection was not openly expressed, it influenced his decision-making.
Respect for the Hierarchy: In traditional martial arts such as aikido, kendo or judo, it is essential to follow the rules of etiquette and discipline of the dojo. Although a student or practitioner may wish to train at his own pace or question the techniques, the Tatemae allows him to act in accordance with the group and follow in the footsteps of his teachers.
Resilient Attitude: During training, a martial artist faces physical and emotional challenges that sometimes lead to frustration or exhaustion. Tatemae helps to adopt an attitude of perseverance and respect for the dojo and fellow students.
Adaptation to Roles:Martial artists who participate in tournaments or exhibitions must maintain an attitude that represents their discipline and respect protocol, even if they feel nervous or tense inside. Here, Tatemae acts as armor that reflects a confident and confident image.
For a martial artist, reconnecting with his true emotions and deep aspirations is vital to his inner peace and growth. Honne allows him to examine the “why” behind his actions, something that strengthens his purpose and drives him to continue, not just out of duty, but out of personal conviction.
Personal reflection: At the end of the day, the warrior wonders about his progress, his difficulties and his achievements. This time of introspection is an expression of Honne, allowing him to connect with his authentic purpose.
Integration of the Honne and Tatemae:True mastery in martial arts is achieved when a warrior manages to integrate Honne and Tatemae in a harmonious way, acting in society with an appropriate façade, but remaining faithful to his inner values.
The use of Tatemae and Honne is not limited to martial arts; in daily life, these concepts can be applied to manage personal, professional and social relationships.
At work: An employee might have innovative ideas but act with Tatemae in meetings to respect hierarchy and protocols. Later, in private, he might express his ideas to a trusted supervisor, reflecting his Honne.
In Family Relationships: Tatemae makes living together more bearable by acting with kindness and respect, even in disagreements. However, Honne is vital in intimate communication to strengthen genuine bonds.
In conflict situations, the ability to apply Tatemae and Honne in a balanced manner can make the difference between peacefully resolving a problem or escalating it. When Tatemae is used, direct conflict is avoided and a solution is sought that allows all parties to maintain harmony. However, Honne allows the individual to respectfully communicate their true feelings when the environment is receptive.
Tatemae and Honne invite us to reflect on the balance between our external expressions and our true emotions. In today's society, learning to manage these concepts can help us cultivate healthier and more authentic relationships.
Authenticity in the Digital World: On social media, many people show an idealized version of their lives (Tatemae), which can disconnect them from their true identity. Recognizing this process helps to find safe spaces to express Honne.
Labor Relations: Applying Tatemae in the work environment to respect hierarchies, but without losing the sense of Honne, allows for respectful and authentic professional relationships.
To apply Tatemae and Honne in real life, it is helpful to consider the context and purpose of each situation.
Analyze the Environment: Before deciding whether or not to express Honne, it is important to assess whether the environment is safe and whether the people involved will be receptive. In formal settings, Tatemae can facilitate more harmonious interactions.
Cultivate Personal Reflection:Taking time to reflect on one's own Honne is crucial so that our external expressions become not just a mask, but a genuine extension of our inner self.
Adapting Tatemae without Losing One's Self: In everyday life, it is not necessary to completely suppress Honne to use Tatemae. Maintaining balance between the two can enrich interactions and allow for solid personal growth.
Beyond their application to social and professional life, Tatemae and Honne offer a philosophy of harmony between the external and internal self. These notions allow us to understand that maintaining a façade is not synonymous with a lack of authenticity, but rather a tool that facilitates peaceful coexistence. At the same time, Honne reminds us of the importance of not losing sight of our essence, our values and our authentic emotions.
Tatemae and Honne, when applied correctly, can transform the life of a martial practitioner and of any individual seeking to find a balance between what they show to the world and what they truly feel. Cultivating this duality allows us to move forward with confidence and authenticity in life, finding strength in our inner principles and reflecting peace in our conduct towards others.
