With the rise of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who sought to unify Japan, Date Masamune found himself in a difficult position. Initially, the Tohoku leader resisted Hideyoshi's authority, leading to tensions between the two. However, Masamune, seeing Hideyoshi's growing influence, opted for a pragmatic strategy and eventually submitted to his authority, allowing him to retain his dominance in Tohoku and prevent the destruction of his clan.

Thanks to his alliance with Hideyoshi, Masamune joined several military campaigns, including the invasion of Korea. Although this campaign was not successful, it allowed Date Masamune to consolidate his reputation as a brave and loyal daimyō. This relationship also gave him the opportunity to maintain peace and prosperity in his territories, as well as to extend his network of contacts at the Kyoto court.

In 1613, Date Masamune sent an embassy to Rome, known as the Keicho Embassy, under the leadership of Hasekura Tsunenaga, a samurai trusted by Date Masamune. The mission was intended to establish trade ties with Europe and to gain the Pope's support for Christianity in Japan.

This embassy reached Spain, Mexico and Italy, being the first Japanese diplomatic mission to cross the Atlantic Ocean and reach the Vatican. Although the mission was not as successful as Masamune had hoped, it was an example of his open-mindedness and his desire to strengthen his dominance through international relations.

Date Masamune showed a relatively tolerant attitude towards Christianity compared to other Japanese leaders of the time, even supporting Jesuit missionaries. However, with the ban on Christianity under the Tokugawa shogunate, Masamune was forced to restrict his inclinations towards foreign religion, although he managed to maintain a moderate stance in order to avoid conflict with the shogunate.
